The Early Bird

In this image, I’m the one on the right. Poor Jem—what a trooper. The mask was made out of leather by an artist who happens to be local—I was not ‘local’ when I commissioned it. Caroline Guyer, of High Springs, makes these entirely by hand—she’s brilliant! You have to see her in action. Search the web for PBS Art Loft: Leather Mask Making.

You may not know:

Educator

I’ve had the opportunity to present talks on Designing for Technology at events like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Allen K. later wrote, “Of the numerous events at CES, your presentation on design was the top thing I experienced at the show.“

Marketing Maven

As a Director of Marketing, I developed innovative strategies that fused the art, fun(c), and soul of modern user experience design to drive immersive engagement and tailored brand growth.

Art Lover

I have a deep appreciation for concept art. The Aviary Collection includes the original hand-painted presentation renderings of the Apple Cafe, abandoned in 1996 when Apple was, believe it or not, in decline.

Story Teller

I write fiction that are semi-autobiographical accounts of my life, from stories that made a splash, like Whale Tails and The Winged Jellyfish, to the bittersweet memorial I Call It, Bird. My work drifts between the unbelievable and the undeniable.

String Theorist

My early study of music was primarily with piano, trumpet, saxophone, and guitar. After school, I worked at a recording studio. In the ’90s, I played in the band Basic Humans, turning down a tour to attend university. Now, I explore it more scientifically—shaping sound the way crystals form and colors combine.

Product Designer

Dr. Sparrow and The Brilliant Assistant Shobha run our precision product development lab, located planar yet always slightly off-axis to the intersection of the left and right hemispheres of my brain.

Koloroo began as a first-of-its-kind iPod widget for interactively exploring color schemes generated by math, on an iPod! We later used the technique for a tip calculator, interactive silhouette dancers, and a shake-to-tell-fortune widget which may, or may not, have resulted in a cease and desist letter.

In early 2000, I launched Guifx as the first e-commerce marketplace for the sale and distribution of digital goods, featuring graphical user interface (GUI) components for touchscreen products. I developed Luminvert tech and 16-bit dithering methods which allowed high-quality graphic designs to render nicely on low-resolution displays.

After writing an article on designing to scale, I built the precision pixel calculator to help other user experience designers work in life size.

Hacker

… but always “for good and not evil.” From untangling and recovering corrupt files, and writing elegant password retrieval tools, to developing firmware patches and hardware enhancements.

Aphant

I have total blackout aphantasia—I lack any ability to form mental images or sounds. Think of an apple—do you see an apple? That’s your mind’s eye at play. If you didn’t, you might have aphantasia.

The Early Bird

My name traces back to German roots and translates to “Morning Ostrich.” While I admire the ostrich—a fine bird, huzzah—The Morning Ostrich doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

I’ve had a number of different color wheel programs, but straight away this is the nicest, quickest, and aesthetically the best interface.

Once again you and your team did an excellent job!!!
I look forward to working with you more!

Do you have a book or manual you’ve written on GUI design? I base everything I do on four or five recommendations of yours — with success! Thank you!
